West Coast SM5 Tournament

West Coast SM5 Tournament

Postby xThanatoSx » Sun Dec 21, 2008 3:10 am

Yes, you read that correctly.

Sean's graciously approved the days, so the travel arrangements etc can now properly begin.

Important Information

Dates: February 27 & 28 (Friday/Saturday). The 27th is technically not an official part of the tournament, but the tournament fee will include social games for the evening (essentially, the midnight madness). The 28th, the tournament itself will run from 10p - roughly 5a.

Game being played: Space Marines 5. Please - like there was ever a doubt :D 6 player teams (2 S, 1 of everything else), 15 minute games.

Cost: $30/person including both 27th & 28th, $20/person for tournament day (28th) only

Ruleset: Tournament rules. I am admittedly in a bit of a discussion with Sean atm with regards to a couple of things that he doesn't want to enforce (or wants to enforce differently). However, these are comparatively minor issues that should be sorted once I'm physically back in the country.

Please note - there is a MAXIMUM number of FIVE (5) teams allowable for this event. Priority will be given to teams and players traveling from Chula Vista and St. George.

I'm sure I've left some things out, but this is at least a starting point.

Any questions, please post and ask.

You can count on at least 1 team perhaps 2 from Chula Vista taking a road trip to old Sac-of-tomatoes. I really like the arena up there and look foward to taking on Sean and his "Motley Crew" :2up and of course the Team from Utah. :D

What are the things he dose not want to enforce? Or want to enforce differently? Is it a detail that can be easily overlooked? Or is it a rule that significantly changes the pace of the game? [Running is allowed now!]
And another thing. Who will be marshaling the tournament? Will Sean's regular game marshals? Or will it be the members that don't compete in the tournament? Or a combination of the both.

He and I are having a debate regarding the part of the shielding rule (13c if you want to be specific) that requires a shoulder to be shown. Bluntly, he doesn't think it's necessary and I vehemently disagree with him :D In addition, Sean also wants following to be defined as "3 steps", not "3 meters". Again, we have some disagreements there. However, as both of these things are going to be enforced at nationals, I think it's something that we all need to practice with as much as possible.

With regards to your comment about running - there's actually no rule specifically outlawing running. That falls under the Dangerous Play category - sometimes it's ok, sometimes it's not.

As for marshalling, what generally happens at tournaments (and this one is no exception) is that people who are not playing will be in reffing. The idea here is that newer players shadow with more experienced refs so as to learn quicker.

Having said all of the above, the idea on this is not for it to be a penalty fest. The idea is for all 3 of our sites to get together and have a fun tournament while getting in shape for nats. My perfect world scenario for all of this (and as long as everyone buys into it, it'll be fantastic) is for everyone to be playing in good spirit and genuinely trying to get the rules solidified into everyone's brains for when it matters.

Maps as requested.

Keep in mind these aren't 100% accurate anymore, but they'll at least give you a good feel for the maze.

sacdown.jpg
Yellow Base doesn't exist anymore.
Green Base is now Blue Base.
The Base Towers in the picture don't exist anymore - the base targets are now wall mounted.

Regarding the maps, there is no yellow base, but there are targets that are (roughly) in the locations of the red and green targets on the map. There are also two neutral targets, one near each base, so there should be 3 hittable targets in play during the tournament, and no warbot.

Near as I can tell, the blueprints are otherwise accurate in regards to the maze.

That map is harder to read than CV's.. I think i get it though.

How big is the arena?

And are those ramps as big as they look like? They look even longer than CV's :wtf4 I didn't know it was possible.

The arena is about 5500 square feet if memory serves. And yes, the ramps are long. But it still doesn't take any more than 15 sec. to get up either one of them.

Alrighty

Well, our ramps taking 2-3 seconds to get up. 15 seconds makes gameplay much different

Well, bear in mind 15 sec. is a very conservative estimate. ;)

But yes, from what I remember of St. George (and I know you guys have changed), out ramps are much longer.

hm... no, the map probably won't be updated to reflect the maze as is any time soon.

mostly because the person who did the original map for us hasn't come back yet since none of us can get ahold of him. and he actually knew how to use autocad, unlike the rest of us.

the map is still close to what it actually is - just not 100% dead on perfect.

GGGGGRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

I really want to attend this tournament, but i'm leaving the night before to fly to Sweden to play in the Sweden Armageddon lasertag tournament, which is happening March 6-8. I could change my itinerary and leave after the Sacramento Tournament, but then i have to pay a big change fee. Oh well. I'll send you guys a postcard, and i'll certainly try to make the next tournament.

It looks close enough to me. I haven't seen any major differences. The only real change I see is the bases, but those are easy enough to see the day before the tourney. But the layout isn't any different as far as I can read.

Yes. Red base is where it appears (roughly) on the map. Blue base is in the area where Green base was. There is no yellow base. There is one neutral under the bridge of the switchback ramp (near Red base), and another neutral in the first "castle" cutout near the Blue base.

On the second picture, the grayish-brown areas are the ramps. Only is fairly long and straight, while the other is a switchback. The blue areas are solid flooring of the second floor.
